Summary
The play begins with King Duncan hearing the news of his generals Banquo and Macbeth conquering two different armies. After the battle, Banquo and Macbeth run into the three witches. The witch’s prophesize that Macbeth would become thane of Cawdor and eventually the king of Scotland; Banquo sons would give birth to kings but he will never be king. Both men pay no attention to them, but soon Macbeth is congratulated on his victory and named thane of Cawdor. Because the last thane of Cawdor betrayed Scotland and the king condemned him to death. Macbeth is intrigued by the possibility that the other prophecy made by the witches may happen. Macbeth meets with King Duncan and they plan dine at Macbeth’s castle Inverness. Macbeth sends a letter ahead to Lady Macbeth to tell her everything that has happened. Lady Macbeth wants the kingship and she wants Macbeth to kill Duncan to gain the throne. When Macbeth arrives at Inverness, Lady Macbeth manipulates him and tells him he has to kill King Duncan. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth plans to get Duncan two chamberlains drunk, and they next morning they will blame Duncan’s death on them. While Duncan was sleeping, Macbeth stabs him although he has doubts and the vision of the bloody dagger. The next morning Duncan’s death is discovered, Macbeth kills the guards in his rage. Donalbain and Malcolm runs away thinking they might be next and Macbeth becomes king.
Macbeth fearing the prophecy about Banquo‘s sons decides to hire a group of murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. The murderers succeed in killing Banquo but fleance escapes. During the big feast, Banquo was supposed to attend before he was killed; Macbeth receives the news of Banquo’s death. During the feast, Banquo’s ghost appears and Macbeth is frantic and the guests believe his lost his mind. Lady Macbeth makes excuses to the guests for Macbeth’s behavior. Frightened Macbeth visits the witches in the cave, where the show him a series of demons and spirits who show him more prophecies. The prophecies were that he should be aware of Macduff, and no one born of man could hurt him; and that he will be safe until the Birnam wood comes to Dunsinane castle. Macbeth feels save because no one is not born of woman. He learns that Macduff has gone to England to join Malcolm and orders Macduff castle seized and his wife and children murdered. Macduff hears news of his families’ execution and wants revenge. Malcolm and Macduff marches down to England to challenge Macbeth’s forces. The Scottish nobles support both Macduff and Malcolm. Meanwhile Lady Macbeth is plagued by fits of sleepwalking in which she tries to wash off the bloodstains in her hands (although her hands her clean). Macbeth receives news that Lady Macbeth killed herself and sinks into despair. He fortifies Dunsinane in order to defend himself. He soon learns the English army is coming through Dunsinane shielded with boughs cut from Birnam wood. He realizes the witches’ prophecies are being fulfilled. The English army defeats Macbeth forces slowly. Macbeth encounters Macduff on the battlefield and continues to fight. Macduff says his not born of woman but was ripped out of his mother’s womb. Macduff beheads Macbeth and Malcolm is crowned King of Scotland.
